Site of the ancient Tsurai Indian village is just below the Trinidad Memorial Lighthouse. Amazingly large driftwood. For a great walking loop, take the Lighthouse steps to the beach, head south to Parker Creek Trail, take it back up and through town.
Access this peaceful movie-set gorgeous beach from the parking lot at Trinidad Bay, or from the north at the Park. You'll often have it to yourself, and sometimes share it with surfers and dog lovers. Find Grandmother Rock, the wave-carved Arch, a natural bridge to Pewetole Island with its blow-hole, and great tide-pools full of colorful life.
On Scenic Drive just south of town. Spectacular scenery with seastacks, sea lions and Luffenholz Creek. A trail takes visitors to a striking vantage point above the beach where the waves crash below.
On Scenic Drive a little further south. Watch surfers and see the remains of an old lumber loading station.
Off of Scenic Drive down by Moonstone Grill. The Little River meets the sea beneath towering cliffs. Great beach for families. The crossing point for our Trinidad to Clam Beach Run.
Hike down a gentle slope to a beautiful sheltered beach. Another short hike above the beach reaches Elk’s Head with thundering waves and wind, and breath-taking, rugged scenery. Nature at it's wildest on display for you.
- "The Park's dense forests of spruce, hemlock, pine, fir and red alder stretch over an ocean headland with lovely wildflower-festooned meadows." Look for agates on Agate Beach, watch whales, sea lions, and visit Sumeg Village - a reconstruction of a Yurok Indian village. Campsites for individuals, families, and groups are available at the park.
Big Lagoon is separated from the Pacific Ocean by a sand spit. The lagoon is calm and great for kayaking, canoeing and row boating. Campsites are available at the County Park. More information at the HCCVB Web site ( )
- A litter further north and you'll be at the Visitor's Center. Happy 40th! Tall Trees and Ladybird Johnson Groves along with Minor's Ridge are popular. The site recommends a drive "... to the Klamath River Overlook on Requa Road to view where this wild and scenic river meets the sea." Couldn't agree more. It's a beautiful view.
- "Set aside in the early 1920’s by the forethought of the people of California and the generosity of the Save-the-Redwoods League, Prairie Creek is a sanctuary of old growth coast redwood." Prairie Creek has many trails, a charming Visitor's Center, camping, Fern Canyon, Gold Bluffs Beach, and Elk! A World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve.
- "Two heads are better than one. That’s one way of looking at Trinidad State Beach and the two dramatic heads—Elk and Trinidad—-that overlook a picturesque cove, harbor and island. Trinidad Head, a commanding, 362-foot high promontory, is the commanding backdrop of the town of Trinidad, a picturesque harbor and a historic lighthouse. Sitka spruce-spiked Elk Head, located just north of Trinidad, is more of a secret, its scenic trails used mainly by locals."
Follow the trail up the Head and watch the grey whales on their migration. Trinidad Area trails take hikers to ocean overlooks, through Redwood Forests and along beaches. Trail maps are available at locations throughout Greater Trinidad.
A boat launch is available for ocean fishing boats. A free launch area is located near the pier on the beach for kayaks and small boats. A boat launch is also available for non-power boats at Big Lagoon.
Grey whales, seals and sea lions, and river otters abound along the beaches. Giant Roosevelt Elk can be viewed roaming freely near Orick. Over 400 species of birds including Osprey, puffins, and blue herons make Trinidad a bird watchers paradise. Tidepools abound at most beaches.
